Other Special State Provisions

Georgia offers a variety of state and federal benefits to eligible veterans, service members, and their families. The information below highlights several programs and resources available to Georgia veterans. Benefits and eligibility requirements may change, so veterans are encouraged to verify current information through the Georgia Department of Veterans Service (GDVS) or the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Veterans Employment Preference

Eligible veterans may receive hiring preference for certain State of Georgia employment opportunities. Additional preference may apply to veterans with service-connected disabilities.

Guardianship Assistance

Georgia law provides procedures for guardianship appointments involving incompetent veterans or veterans’ children when VA benefits are involved.

Accessible Parking for Disabled Veterans

Veterans displaying a valid disabled veteran license plate issued by Georgia or another state may use designated accessible parking spaces in accordance with Georgia law.

Hunting and Fishing Licenses

Georgia offers several free or reduced-cost honorary hunting and fishing licenses for eligible veterans and residents, including:

  • Returning veterans recently discharged from active duty

  • Permanently and totally disabled veterans

  • Permanently disabled Georgia residents

  • Totally blind residents

  • Georgia residents age 65 and older

Eligibility requirements and renewal guidelines may apply.

Military Commissary and Exchange Access

Certain veterans, including veterans with service-connected disabilities, Purple Heart recipients, former prisoners of war, and eligible caregivers may qualify for military commissary and exchange privileges. Veterans should contact a military installation ID card office or the VA for current eligibility requirements.

Fuel Service Assistance

Georgia law requires certain fuel stations offering both self-service and full-service options to provide fuel service assistance to eligible disabled veterans at the self-service price under qualifying conditions.

Georgia State Park Discounts

Eligible Georgia veterans with VA-rated service-connected disabilities may qualify for discounted admission to Georgia state parks, historic sites, and recreational areas.

Applications are processed through the Georgia Department of Veterans Service.

Vital Records Assistance

Veterans, dependents, and veterans organizations may request certain vital records documents through GDVS without charge when needed for veterans benefits or claims purposes.

Mental Health and Crisis Support

Veterans in crisis or experiencing emotional distress can receive immediate confidential support by dialing:
